The atmosphere in the Amphitheater was filled with excitement as students cheered for their peers and celebrated each senior. Seniors decorated their pennants with their school’s colors, mascots, and plans after university or community college, representing their’ plans and goals.
On May 1st, seniors around the nation commit themselves to the college they plan on attending, rescinding all other acceptances. At Preuss, seniors create pennants to announce their path after high school and present them in the Amphitheater. Seniors were called up by their advisory teachers, Villaolobos, Chittuluru, Chovy, and Garcia, and one by one, stated their name, plans after high school, and received a celebratory cupcake from the counselors.
SIR day took place during block 7, and this year, other classes were able to join and celebrate the seniors’ accomplishments and congratulate them as they prepare for their next chapter after graduation.
“It felt really rewarding to finally announce where I’m going after years of watching other people do it,” said Jaya Carter (‘26).
Carter will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles, along with a couple of other seniors.
For many seniors, SIR Day represents a sense of community built through their years at Preuss.
“SIR Day is more than just announcing a college,” said Carter ‘26. “It represents all the challenges we overcame as a class and reminds us that we’re prepared for the next step.”
Teachers and staff members also shared pride in the graduating class.
“SIR day is one of the most inspiring events in Preuss tradition because of how it inspires other students and highlights their growth,” expressed Mr. Mike, one of the school’s supervisors.
For underclassmen in attendance, the event served as motivation for their future endeavors. Sara Bisrat (‘29) watched the celebration with her friends to congratulate her brother, Samuel Bisrat (‘26).
“Watching the seniors announce their colleges made me excited to go up on that stage in a few years and say where I will be after high school,” said Bisrat (‘29).
As the event came to a close, seniors gathered with friends, teachers, and advisors to take photos and celebrate. SIR marked not only just another milestone off their senior year list, but also the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
“Even though many of us are staying in San Diego, SIR Day still feels like the beginning of a new journey,” said Maedeh Rashidi (‘26), one of the Presidents of the Muslim Student Association, “We’re all moving forward and starting a new chapter of our lives.”
