The new The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was released on April 1st, 2026 in theatres. Directed by Aaron Horvath, this is the sequel to The Super Mario Bros made in collaboration by Nintendo and Illumination. This sequel had been highly anticipated due to the tease about Rosalina’s debut. The movie featured new characters, good visuals and sound track, and a sneak peak to the next movie.
The movie begins with Mario and Luigi finding Yoshi and making him a part of their friend group. Then Rosalina gets kidnapped by Junior from her ship in which she lives with her “kids” who are stars. One of her children then leaves to find Peach. Peach and the others then unite to try and find Rosalina including Bowser, who later becomes evil again and helps Junior.
The story is very funny throughout, with some awkward moments between Mario and Peach. It had a good number of action scenes and lots of fun jokes throughout. The varying personalities of Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi make them a perfect group, Yoshi is young and adventurous, Luigi is timid and caring, and Mario is brave and smart. That dynamic makes them work well together and they act like a realistic friend group. One thing I didn’t really like was the absence of most of the characters from the old movie, for example, Donkey Kong. I think he would’ve made a great addition to the movie, it would’ve been funny to see him making fun of Mario again.
The Super Mario Movie introduced various characters from the games, such as Rosalina, Yoshi, and Fox McCloud, that fans couldn’t wait to see as the characters had been leaked before the release. Seeing these beloved characters on the big screen made me relive many old memories growing up with the Mario games and many other viewers shared the same reaction. The voice actors did a great job replicating what they sound like in the games, and that really helped in bringing the characters to life.
I really liked the whole movie and the way it connected the movie to old games all throughout to create nostalgia to older audiences that grew up with them. Bryan Tyler worked with Koji Kondo, an old Nintendo composer who worked on the old Mario games to prepare the sound track for the movie, showing how devoted the composers were to in a way bring the games back to life. There are various little easter eggs spread out during the movie that any true fan of the games could recognize.
Towards the end of the movie we were shown a sneak peak to the next movie that has audiences, including me excited, for the what’s to come. Princess Daisy was introduced; however, we don’t know how she will be integrated and how the story will move forward. All we know is that she was at the gateway galaxy at the end of the movie.
I believe that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was a great movie, it was really worth the watch and recommend it to people with younger siblings or cousins who’d like to spend some time with them.
