Based on a viral internet horror story created by Kane Parsons, the science-fiction horror film Backrooms was released in theatres on May 29, 2026. Backrooms was directed by Kane Parsons, who gained popularity through his YouTube channel’s series of the same name, “Backrooms.” Backrooms combine elements of suspense, ambient, and psychological horror that combine to create an original cinematic experience. Using its unsettling atmosphere and the mysterious storytelling throughout the film, the film explores the themes of fear and the unknown. Backrooms is a great choice for viewers who enjoy the mini-series on YouTube, horror in general, and immersive storytelling.
The story follows our protagonist Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is a struggling furniture store owner whose life changes due to discovering a strange doorway hidden beneath his store. Throughout the film, as Clark ventures deeper into the mysterious dimension known as the “Backrooms,” he is trapped inside within its endless maze of unfamiliar territories that defy all of reality itself. Throughout the film, Clark encounters disturbing entities, strange environments, and encounters difficulties that test his physical and mental strength. As Clark tries to find his way out of the Backrooms, he uncovers the many secrets of the Backrooms and its connection to reality.
As the story progresses, viewers, including myself, are extremely invested in Clark’s journey as he is struggling to survive in an environment that is unpredictable and filled with dangers. That is what makes Backrooms engaging is the film’s ability to create suspense without relying on the traditional jump scares. Instead, the film utilizes the mysterious atmosphere of the Backrooms, and psychological tension which keeps the audience intrigued. The film gradually reveals new information while maintaining a sense of uncertainty, making every new discovery feel more impactful in the story.
One of the strongest aspects of the film are the performances. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s acting performance delivers a convincing portrayal of a man who is overwhelmed with fear and confusion, while tirelessly trying to find the truth behind the Backrooms. Ejiofor’s performance allows the audience to resonate with him emotionally, despite the many unusual circumstances that are surrounding him throughout the story. Not only is Ejiofor a great example, but also the supporting cast throughout the film: Renate Reinsve who plays “Mary,” Mark Duplass who plays “Phil,” Finn Bennett who plays “Bobby,” and Lukita Maxwell who plays as “Kat.”
Another aspect that greatly strengthens the film is the cinematography and its visual design. The Backrooms are brought to life through the endless number of hallways and empty rooms that contribute to the unsettling atmosphere, making the audience, including myself, uneasy throughout the film. The film’s visual effects transform ordinary locations into a terrifying environment that feels completely unnatural, and also the combined sound design and the creative camera work makes the film much more immersive for viewers.
Overall, I would recommend the film mainly to high school students, horror fans, and ultimately anyone interested in the uniqueness and mystery that science-fiction stories hold. Backrooms offers far more than the simple scares by exploring the themes of curiosity, and the fear of the unknown. The movie has great visuals, suspense, story, and great memorable moments due to the performances throughout the film. Backrooms stands out as one of the most creative horror films that has been released this year.
