“The Rookie” created by Alex Hawley for ABC, is a drama series that follows the main character John Nolan. He’s a 40 year-old man who is out to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer in Los Angeles. The show is 7 seasons long with an 8th season set to premiere on January 6, 2026. The show is available to watch across several streaming services such as Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, etc. “The Rookie” is a great show to watch because it is entertaining, appropriate for all ages, and it has a unique plot to it.
“The Rookie” is a great show that keeps the viewer hooked with plot twists and new adventures that await these characters. The characters themselves are also very entertaining, with each of them having their own internal development across the show. For example, a popular character is Lucy Chen. She is very optimistic, ambitious and compassionate. She is also very resilient, which can sometimes get her into trouble. Another interesting character is Jackson West. He is a lot like Lucy. He is always trying to improve and show his capabilities to his father and advocate for people of his ethnicity. Another great character is Tim Bradford. He was Lucy’s training officer who had a strict demeanor when around her but on the inside he was just as soft as her, that personality led him to be an interesting character and a fan favorite. The characters are all relatable to viewers, which helps engage the audience to keep them interested. The variety of characters and their distinct personalities and backgrounds helps the show to further attract a wide range of different audiences and be enjoyable to many.
In addition, the show is mostly appropriate for all ages. The show lacks foul language, less vivid portrayal of violence and gore, and removal of suggestive mature themes which make it appropriate for young audiences to watch. The show is heavily promoted and posted on apps like Tiktok and Instagram, where they show small clips of scenes. That is how I found the show and decided to watch it. Many drama shows today are mainly targeted for adults and have more mature content, while “The Rookie” is targeted for a more broad audience of generally 13+.
The unique and refreshing plot that “The Rookie” offers is a nice refresher from all of the other drama series that generally share the same themes. The idea of a 40 year-old man being a rookie for a police department is really entertaining because we often connect rookies to younger people and the idea of an old man being a rookie is humorous. Additionally the fact that that main idea is based on a true story makes it more amusing. From the beginning of the show, our main character is jumping into action, and the high intensity situations that keep the viewer engaged. The show touches on different topics that engage a variety of people such as racism and sexism.
All of these factors make the show feel more realistic and entertaining, as it is more deeply filled with emotion that can help viewers connect with the show and characters. I recommend “The Rookie” because it is a great show to watch.
