One of the biggest complaints students have at Preuss is the dress code policy. Is it really that bad as they claim, though? Obviously students want to have fun and liberties wearing what they want, but they do not realize the benefits of wearing a school uniform. Wearing a uniform is necessary because it can help reduce some visible differences between students, make it easier to stay focused during the school day, and create a stronger sense of belonging in the school.
Many students want to choose their own clothes to wear. Most likely because they want to show off, be in comfortable clothes, or simply because they do not like how the uniform looks or feels. Truly, though, we should not mind as it makes our lives much easier to navigate.
Uniforms help conceal the differences you would see in students’ attire. This is especially important at a school like Preuss, where many students are from a low income household. Some clothes are much more expensive, and not everybody has the privilege to wear the nice clothes others may have. Without a uniform, the differences in what students wear become increasingly noticeable, and students may become highly insecure. Bullying becomes a problem with that as well and can affect a kid mentally. Even if nobody says anything about their clothes, the gap in appearance can affect students’ self-esteem and can make them feel left out or even worthless. With uniforms, everybody has the same thing on. Nobody has the need to worry about someone wearing a better looking outfit than theirs, and being bullied or even slightly teased for it.
Wearing a uniform also makes people’s morning routines a lot easier. Lots of students can get caught up with what they want to wear for school that day. It probably takes up a lot of time to pick out your outfit. It might not seem like a big deal, but for students at Preuss, uniforms are extremely important because of the long commutes students often make to get to school. Uniforms are highly useful because they keep getting dressed simple, quick, and remove that daily pressure, making it easier to focus on schoolwork.
Uniforms also bring people together and create a community. When everybody is wearing the same clothes, it connects students, even in a minor way. You might still have different friend groups, but there is something about knowing everyone is part of the same community that can build more school pride. This is even more true at a smaller school like Preuss, where the community is tight knit, and a big aspect of the school. Uniforms at schools are a great method for students to reduce visible differences between them, keep them less distracted, and create a sense of belonging in the school.
