In November 2025, SNAP and EBT benefits are currently being challenged to be taken away, or reduced due to the government shutdown; currently the longest one in United States history. These benefits should not be removed or reduced due to them providing and supplying millions of people in need with food and other necessities.
To begin , SNAP and EBT benefits help many low income families in a variety of ways. These programs provide and help avoid sudden financial stress or unexpected expenses, for example, covering many household grocery stores costs, cleaning supplies, utility bills, etc. These benefits especially serve as food support during emergencies such as natural disasters, viruses/disease (Covid-19 ), and job losses. SNAP and EBT is a way that helps people right away when they need it the most. From many events that have occurred such as hurricanes, wild fires, or sudden job losses due to an event (such as the government shut down), due to the benefits of these programs, families can quickly get provided help with food and necessities which ensure they won’t be hungry.
Secondly, SNAP and EBT also significantly reduces the amount of households not getting the opportunity to have consistent access to nutritious foods. If these benefits get taken away or reduced it could force many families with children to decide whether they should use their money to eat well, or use it for other necessities such as rent. SNAP and EBT programs allow families to buy and obtain nourishing food, this ensures families, adults, and children a much more balanced diet. This helps everyone’s overall health and well being.
Last but not least, these benefits should still be continued due to its major boost to the economy. For example, factors such as the immediate circulation, which is when low income households spend their benefits quickly on necessities. This rapid spending is very critical to keep driving demand for groceries, local goods, ect. EBT and SNAP are strengthening the United States economy by creating job opportunities. Many researches by the USDA (Economic Research Service) have shown that Americans roughly spend 142.2 billion dollars annually, which circulates through the United States economy. This provides the government money and helps sustain a significant amount of jobs.
Overall, SNAP and EBT benefits should not be changed or taken away because it provides help and support to families and people in need to survive.
