In August 2017, I took my first steps into The Preuss School UC San Diego campus. All my friends from elementary school had gone to Albert Einstein Middle School, and I was frustrated in attending an unorthodox school like Preuss. I was unaware of the transformative journey, fun memories, and community of inspiring individuals that awaited me.
Now, in July of 2024, I will proudly take my last steps as a student of the Preuss School, graduating across the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Epstein Family Amphitheater, in front of my loved ones and the collective culture of families celebrating that same journey of opportunity. Whether it was taking the trolley to school, to facing rigorous classes, and attending outside school-related events, it was all worth it. Preuss has led me into the right direction of pursuing higher education in college as a low-income student from undocumented parents.
Some of my favorite memories have been playing for my high school’s varsity soccer team. After dealing with a hip-flexor injury that kept me from playing my sophomore and junior year, I was able to come back and play my senior year to an almost undefeated season. These moments meant alot to me since I have been playing soccer since I was four years old, playing for competitive clubs in tournaments across California. I plan to continue my passion for playing soccer through my college years and play against other University of California (UC) college soccer teams.
Additionally, I made fond memories of with friends at school events and outside of school, whether it be having a fun time at homecoming or going out to eat after school. The friendships I’ve created at this school are one of the biggest blessings I have, as they are students who share similar life goals, experiences, and hobbies. Teachers at Preuss have also been a great support to my personal and educational success. They have always been there for me and inspired me to pursue a career related to writing.
Furthermore, I’ve made wonderful memories dedicating time to clubs at Preuss, such as Ecology Club and Interact Club, where I indulged in outside community service events with friends. I was able to contribute to my community by supporting a cleaner ecosystem and helping people from all cultures dealing with food-insecurity and sickness.
As I reflect on my time at Preuss, I am grateful for all the experiences and fun times I made within the Preuss community. I’ve learned the importance of supporting yourself and others in order to overcome personal and educational challenges life throws at students. Also, the importance of surrounding yourself with a good group of people that are always there for you and have good ideals in education and life.
As of today, I will continue my education at University of California, Riverside, majoring in Chicano Studies to continue learning about hispanic communities facing social injustice in America. At the same time, I hope to continue playing competitive soccer, joining clubs, attending community service events, and having fun experiences.
The end of my high school years at Preuss introduced the beginning of a new life in Riverside, California.
