The Preuss administration has taken measures to prevent traffic backup during dropoff and pick up time with the help of the University of California San Diego police department. UCPD is using police cars during pick up to help the flow of traffic. In addition, the administration has sent messages to parents via Parent Square informing how to move along in the bus area.
Administration stated that one cause of the traffic back up during pickups of scholarships is that some parents want to get there early and wait for their scholars.
“We’ve been doing really well with moving people in the bus area, but we think that they’re just going further back along Genesee and they’re starting to go back by the gate and start parking back there,” states Dr. Steitz, Principal.
As parents go further back into Genesee and form double lines, it makes it difficult for parents to get out of the bus area, making it a second cause for traffic back up.
“Wee had a conversation with UCPD about ramping up their enforcement of illegal parking,” added Dr. Steitz.
Administration and the university plans to implement a new system to deal with the back up, adding new signs along the bus area to let parents know that they cannot stop in the bus area. The administration plans to implement the signage along the bus area before the end of the year to help the flow of traffic in the bus area.
“The signage has to go through the university because we’re on university property. So it does take a little bit longer but there is some new signage that we will be implementing,” stated Dr. Steitz.
Parents and their scholars have different opinions on the administration using UCPD to avoid traffic in the bus area and to prevent parents from parking further down Genesee.
“ I feel like the police they added only made it worse because the parents go slower in picking up their kids so as to not get in trouble, states” Jaelyn Ibara (27’). “Also it was kind of pointless adding enforcement at the back of the drop off rather than the front because then the parents park at the front of the bus lane to wait for their kids , and then other parents can’t get out.”
Dr. Steitz has noticed that the morning and after school traffic flow has gotten better as they inform the parents and implement UCPD.
“This year we’ve been able to move them along, so this year it’s been getting a whole lot better as far as the flow.”
