This year’s Varsity and JV volleyball teams have started the season with a new coach, Coach Wirzyla. In addition to coaching, Coach Wirzyla is also a new P.E teacher at the Preuss School UC San Diego.
The Varsity and JV volleyball teams as a whole are transitioning and getting to know Coach Wirzyla better as she brings a new style of coaching.
“I enjoy how patient she is with her teaching, especially with players who may not be as familiar with certain aspects. I think patience is a very important thing for coaches to have,” expressed Maya Servin, who plays outside hitter for the varsity team (‘27).
“She is a good coach because she puts our best skills to use and helps us get more confident with each other and how we can play better as a team. She motivates us by giving us well by giving us positive feedback when we are doing good and bad,” states JV player, Semhall Yalem (‘28).
Allison Solis (‘28) believes the team will improve with her because she makes sure everyone has play time, is confident, and she looks for the better of the team.
“What I like about Coach Wirzyla’s teachings is that she makes sure we also contribute with our ideas, she is always eager to hear our ideas and opinions in everything to help us have the best season yet whether it is with drills or what we practice,” states Varsity Player Allison Solis (‘28).
Servin also appreciates that Coach Wirzyla is very encouraging. She indicated that what she likes about coach is that Coach Wirzyla always knows what to say when they are down in points to help the team get out of their heads.
“I think with this new coach, this team will be able to grow a connection with each other, as that is her primary goal for us, to grow a bond and have a fun session,” states Maya Servin (‘27).
Coach Wirzyla’s three main goals for the teams this year are to build a strong team with positive attitudes, develop individual fundamentals and consistency. She wants her teams to be able to compete with a growth mindset.
“The most important thing I want my athletes to know is that they have it all inside themselves to be successful individuals in life. Everything it takes to succeed in life and to be independent and to take care of themselves they have the intestinal fortitude to do it all when they leave Preuss,” states Coach Wirzyla.
