On Tuesday, September 17th, we witnessed history as the new girls flag football team took the field for their first game against High Tech High.
This is the first year that Preuss will offer flag football for both male and female athletes. The co-ed team played their first game on September 3rd, 2025 against the San Diego Jewish Academy that ended in a tie.
“We could’ve done better in our first game, we tried our best but we knew that we were better than that,” explains Asukulu Amisi (28”) who plays running back and defense.
Because Preuss already has a girls flag football team, the co-ed team consists of only boys. The Co-ed team plays against other co-ed teams, so if the girls want to play in the games they are allowed to play. This not only serves as good practice for the girls but also helps bring together flag football as a whole.
“I feel good about the co-ed team because more people can enjoy it. It can also be used as an equal opportunity for everyone to play a sport they love,” shares Sharon Martinez (28’) who plays center and defense.
For many students, this is their first time playing football outside of clubs, while for other students, they are completely new to flag football. Due to flag football being a new sport makes it harder to find dedicated players.
“I wanted to join the team because it was a new thing at the school and I wanted to be exposed to the sport and play,” said Asukulu Amisi (28’) who plays running back and defense.
The team was created after Dr. J came together with Ms. Villalobos to create a new fall sport. After realizing that girls also wanted to play they started fighting for the team. Ms. Villalobos slowly started encouraging students from winter sports to join when she realized she was short on girls for the roster.
“I wanted to create the team in order to give students more athletic opportunities, also offering a fall sport that is played in teams,” explained Dr.J the coach of the co-ed team.
The addition of flag football to school has made an impact on students. The new sport gives them a chance to play a sport that most of them have never played before. Also the addition of any sport, especially if it is the first ever, makes students more interested to support them. Students find interest in being the first ever to do something.
“I feel good because it is something added to Preuss that makes the school more enjoyable,” Asukulu Amisi (28’) who plays as running back and defence agreed.
The next game that the girls will play is on October 2, 2025. This game will be on Manchester Field.
