Preuss’ first girls flag football camp was held for current 8th-11th graders on Wednesday April 30th and Friday
May 2, 2025 after school, led by Coach Villalobos. The students received the opportunity to experience flag football drills and routines and also learned how it differs from tackle football.
High school girls flag football was introduced as a CIF sport in California during the 2023-24 school year. After noticing how much her students liked the Football Unit during PE, Coach Villalobos decided to hold a football camp for Preuss students. This football camp is evidence that there is interest in a girls flag football team in the future for Preuss.
“They really connected with the activity and the unit got a lot of the girls involved and engaged with the sport. The engagement gave me the idea to make a girls flag football team in progress with the administration,” affirmed Villalobos.
The camp activities on Wednesday consisted of throwing and catching drills and route running routines. On Friday enough girls attended to hold a scrimmage game, in addition to the drills and routines.
“As a female that has played different sports, my biggest push was to get girls that might not be connected with others sports, to try something new,” states Coach Villalobos.
The camp offered girls who maybe never played flag football to try out the sport.
“I decided to attend the football camp because I thought it would be fun if the right people joined and it’s a good addition for Preuss because it allows the students to experience new activities,” stated Halwot Dawit (‘29).
The daily bulletin consists of a QR code for 8-11th grade girls to complete a Google form for interest in playing flag football. This is more proof that a girls flag football team could be established in the near future for Preuss.
