There are many great teachers at the Preuss School, but one who particularly stands out is Dr. Weber. He is one of the brilliant math teachers here at Preuss. He takes on many roles at Preuss beyond teaching math, including advisory teacher, Math Department Chair, and the Preuss’ Union’s Chief Negotiator.
“I have an engineering degree because that’s what my Dad wanted for me. But, once I earned that degree, I knew I had to follow my passion,” states Dr. Weber.
Dr. Weber has been teaching for almost thirty-five years. He has always had a love for teaching but didn’t pursue it right away. Dr. Weber worked in other jobs in the past like coaching swimming for ten years and tutoring for five years before teaching. He started teaching here at Preuss in March of the year 2006.
“I subbed here a bunch, and after the first math lesson I gave, the students applauded! I loved the mission of the school and the students were amazing, so when they had a math opening for the following year, I applied and got it!” states Dr. Weber.
Dr. Weber came to Preuss after taking a leave of absence from his teaching job in Canada so he could complete the research portion of his PhD. He moved to San Diego in February 2006 because a large portion of his research took place in California. He started to substitute at Preuss while conducting his research.
“I’ve always ‘taught’ in some form. I also had some amazing math teachers, with whom I actually did my student teaching. I love the creativity, the challenge and helping people figure out that they really ARE capable of learning tough material,” stated Dr. Weber.
Even though math is a big part of Dr. Weber’s life, it is not all he cares about. He also has other interesting hobbies outside of school.
“I love to ski, ride my bike, work out, listen to music and just be out in nature (beach, forest, mountains, etc.). I also hang out with friends, go to the movies, watch TV and do NYT puzzles like Connections, Wordle, Strands, and the Mini.
Dr. Weber’s hard work reflects through everything he does; students have noticed which makes him a great role model for many here at Preuss.
“Dr. Weber is one of the teachers I most admire here at Preuss. He is always actively checking in on everyone, trying to help anyone who needs it,” states Kayleen Valdez, Weber’s advisory student (‘27).
Dr. Weber is dedicated to being a good math teacher and an effective Chief Negotiator to advocate for teachers.
“I think what I love about teaching the most is that you get to help kids learn to believe in themselves. When that ‘lightbulb’ goes off and they understand something, it’s more than just that they learned math. They’ve gained confidence that THEY CAN LEARN ANYTHING,” states Dr. Weber.
