SIR Day (Statement of Intent to register) takes place nationwide on May 1st. It is the day when students admitted to college must bind themselves to the college they plan on attending, rejecting all their other acceptances. If these students do not submit their intent, their admission will be revoked. In honor of SIR Day, every year Preuss creates pennants that indicate where their path after high school begins. The seniors then present them to the senior class in the amphitheater. Students are called up by advisory class, and each student states their name and their plans after high school.
This year, Preuss celebrated SIR Day on Friday May 2, 2025, during block 3 because school was canceled on May 1st. In this event, seniors were not limited to only choosing a college after high school on their pendant; they could also indicate if they intended to start off through a gap year, by working, entering the army, anything they want to do.
This event allowed students to reflect on their path after high school and hold themselves accountable to the steps they need to take in order to achieve their goals.
Uziel Telumbre deeply reflected on whether college should be in his path after high school.
“I know college wasn’t for me so my career path will start as an EMT,” asserted Telumbre (25’).
Seniors committed to colleges all over the country. The vast majority of students chose to stay in San Diego attending colleges like San Diego State, Cal State San Marcos, UCSD, and San Diego community colleges. Students who committed to community colleges all plan on transferring to a four year university such as UCSD and San Diego State. S few seniors committed to UCLA, CSU Long Beach, and Yale.
This event also allowed students to take a moment to appreciate their high school journey.
“I felt excited to share my plans for the future with people I’ve been around for so long and hear about their plans,” states Katherine Acosta (25’). Acosta continues, ” I’m staying in San Diego but many of the familiar faces I used to see every day will just be a memory.”
“I thought the ceremony was really nice; it made us feel seen because each of us had the opportunity to go up and talk about our plans while being heard by our classmates and teachers,” states Ikhlaas Mohamed (25’).
The class of 2025 pendants are currently displayed in the front office, and pictures of seniors holding their pendants are also being displayed in the front office monitor.
The ceremony ended with Dr. Bandy announcing the class of 2025 salutatorians and valedictorian. This year Preuss has three salutatorians: Yared Fente, Emmy Nong, and Andy Phan. The valedictorian for the class of 2025 is Valerie Colin.
“SIR day made me realize that I am at the last few big events of high school,” states Kirsten Rodriguez (25’).
