If you have ever picked up a controller and dominated the game of Smash Bros, obtaining multiple victories before you are aware of the immense competition that comes with it. That is exactly what the Preuss Esports team is currently experiencing.
The Preuss School UCSD’s Esports team has successfully made it into the playoffs this season. The Preuss Esports Team has showcased their impressive gaming capability by competing in the popular game known as Super Smash Bros. They hold a record of 3-2, with 3 victories against CHS SSBU Varsity, eCardinals CIF and SYHS Cougars Team A.
Climbing the ranks of the Esports rankings progressively was proven quite difficult, but thankfully enough the Preuss Esports team successfully ended up pulling through.
“We ended up ranking forty four out of the 150 that competed in the tournament and improved by 10 spots,” says Ms. Esparza, advisor of this club.
The team is happy about this achievement, as it marks a big milestone for the Esports team.
“It feels great, we finally made the playoffs this year once in fall and once in spring,” says Mr. Hua, advisor of the club.
Despite their success in the gaming scene, The Preuss Esports team faced several issues that could have potentially thrown off their own game.
“Lag issues due to Wi-Fi, rescheduling matches when opponents didn’t show up, and trying to find substitutes—since we need three players on game day—have all made things harder,” informs Mr. Hua.
Encountering these internet related issues made it slightly more difficult for the team to maintain their consistency when playing Smash Bros, but these players continue to strive to improve despite these challenges by practicing outside of school aside from the scheduled times to practice.
“Most of our players are trying to get better,” says Mr. Hua. “They either come to practice or play in their own time to improve and be ready for matches”
The Preuss Esports club is held occasionally from every single Thursday after school from 4-5 in Room E202. With the advisors being Ms. Esparza as well as Mr. Hua with Wednesday practice and the games being on thursday. There is a Varsity and JV section of the Preuss Esports team, essentially the best players making the Varsity team and others the JV team for this year.
As the playoffs for the Preuss School UCSD’s Esports soon commence, the Esports team would greatly benefit from receiving support from fellow Preuss students, so feel free to come by E202 and watch the fight commence.
