A classic romance movie called How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days by Director Donald Perritre stars actors Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. This romcom story, set in New York City, is about two people who both have an agenda of their own who date to get something they want. Overall I recommend this romcom to people because it is a fun movie to watch, and there are multiple funny moments throughout the whole movie.
The plot centers around a magazine writer named Andie Anderson, played by Kate Hudson, who works for a magazine called Composure. Anderson writes about celebrities, fashion, and beauty advice. However, she wants to write about subjects important in the world instead of writing about cosmetics and beauty all the time. So in the meantime, she writes a story on “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days’; hence, the name of the movie. Andie’s article is written to teach women about common mistakes that women might do that can drive away a guy so that they would prevent doing the same in the future, like being overly clingy and annoying too early in a relationship.
At the same time, a man named Ben Carter, played by Mattew McConauhey, wanted a new advertising account that would also get him a big office, but to get his big office, his employer made a bet with him to make a girl of their choosing fall in love with him within ten days. This was suggested by his two other co-workers who wanted the same job, so they set him up knowing previously about Andie’s new assignment. And if he successfully achieved this, then they would let him have the account. They choose Andie Anderson since they had previously heard of her new idea for her story.
One aspect of the film that made this movie great was the acting. Kate Hudson’s ability to change from being a serious and professional working woman to a clingy, annoying girlfriend added comedy to this movie because of how quick she was able to switch between the two. Matthew McConaughey’s acting added comedy to this movie in the same way by quickly being a guy who is charming and wants to impress a girl to a guy who is frustrated and begging his girlfriend all the time.
Another aspect of filmmaking that’s crucial and important in this film is the costume design. In the beginning of the movie, before her assignment, Annie wears professional clothes to show she’s a serious working woman. But as she starts trying to act clingy to push Ben away, she dresses a lot more girly and silly. Similarly, Ben, who in the beginning is dressed casually, in the process of trying to make Andie fall in love with him he begins to dress a lot more formal to try and impress her. This is important because this shows the viewer how they are both pretending to be someone they are not and fooling each other, which makes the movie funny due to their exaggerated and silly acting.
Overall this movie was a really good romance-comedy movie. It was well written in the sense that half of the time I was expecting one person to back down from what they were trying to do, whether it was a bet or an assignment, but no one did. In fact, no matter how much a person wanted to back down, it never happened, which created excitement in the movie.
I recommend this movie to kids from ages thirteen or higher because. Even though it’s a romance movie, in reality it’s not about two love birds in love throughout the whole movie, which is what romance movies commonly have. It’s mostly just two people trying to win what they want. Also it’s not appropriate for children since this movie is more on the mature side. Overall it’s a great movie that many teenagers should watch.
