From March 18th through the 24th, Preuss’ Finance Club provided an opportunity for students to pie their friends and advisory teachers. Each grade was assigned a certain day during their advisory blocks to participate. Seniors were assigned 3/18, Juniors 3/24 (Postponed due to scheduling), Sophomores 3/20, and Freshman 3/21. Finance Club donates 50% of the money raised to each grade for their future events and field trips.
Pie Week started three years ago, right after The Preuss School opened up again after the pandemic.
“We were thinking about how to bring some more school spirit into our school, because oftentimes students mention how there isn’t much fun, social activities and whatnot,” states Mr. Hua, Advisor of the Finance Club. Pie Week coincides with Pie Day on March 14th.
Many teachers so far have already volunteered to participate in this event as a way to show their school spirit.
“So far I’ve seen Mr. Fozi get pied, I’ve seen Ms. Garcia get pied, Dr. Weber, and Ms. Hannah I know are gonna get pied,” states Mr. Hua.
While the event is meant to be fun, one of the volunteers last year during Pie Week didn’t enjoy the experience.
“My experience was not great, unfortunately. Things got out of hand, and it became more about standing in front of someone and hitting them as hard as you can, which was the part that made my overall experience really terrible,” states Mr. Fulchiron.
Still, Pie Week has already attracted many students who are interested in pieing their teachers and peers, and also students who are just interested in watching people get pied.
“Yes, I do plan on participating in Pie Week because I feel that it’s a great way to have fun and support our school financially at the same time,” stated Kenny White (‘27).
Pie Week may seem like an opportunity to pie someone; however, teachers want students to take into account how aggressive they are at throwing the pies at volunteers.
“I don’t think I would have done this again since the idea got a little manipulated. It’s a great idea but the kids made it not funny,” states Mr. Fulchiron.
Even though the overall objective of Pie Week is to have fun and laugh, it’s important to note that the friends or teachers who are getting pied in the face, are also people and need to be treated with respect.
