Shahad Abdillahi (28’) sees students around school without following the dress code all the time. She thinks, “Why don’t they follow the dress code when it makes us look more professional, put together, and we represent the school at the high standard it is placed at?”
Preuss is a school that offers a higher level education that helps students pursue their dreams of attending a university with scholarships. Preuss also has the motto of Kindness, Respect, and Excellence. Students need to represent these attributes by meeting expectations like following the dress code.
The school bulletin frequently reminds students that being in dress code is necessary. If students violate the dress code, they face consequences. Students will often need to give their phones to the office to receive loaners, or on rare occasions teachers give out referrals.
Dress code is especially important because they are more practical and convenient. Most students already have to wake up early because their commute to school takes around one to two hours. Instead of having to wake up and choose an outfit, they already know what they’re going to wear.
Luckily, there are even teachers that represent Preuss by wearing polos as well. For example, Mr. Scott and Mr. Hua wear the staff polo with the Preuss embroidery at least once a week to remind students of how they should look while attending school.
Fortunately, students have learned to adapt to the dress code and are now trying to make the dress code match their styles and personalities. For example, students that like to be girly wear skirts and cute accessories. While other students that like streetwear styles usually wear baggy clothes.
On the other hand, there are students who still don’t like the dress code Preuss has and believe it will be more beneficial to wear their own outfits because they can show off their personality. They believe that a specific dress code prevents them from being stylish because the clothes are “ugly” or uncomfortable.
“I feel like the Preuss dress code just doesn’t let me express myself. I want to be able to dress how I want to during the week.” Brisa Ramirez (28’)
Clearly when students chose to attend Preuss, they knew they were also signing up to commit to a dress code.
Regardless of the reason, though, students should remember to wear clothes that follow the dress code because it is important to represent Preuss and meet Preuss’s standards and motto.
