Members of the BSU club and allies attended the annual Black College Expo, an event that gives students from all over San Diego County the chance to get a real look at the great universities surrounding the U.S., specifically Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs). The event was held at the Bayview Baptist Church on Jan 30th.
College representatives from approximately 30 HBCUs and 30 UCs and CSUs as well as non UCs and CSUs attended the event, which allowed students to have a wide variety of options to explore.
“It’s good for students to go up to the colleges and ask questions versus looking up the general information online because the person you go up and talk to could be the very person that reviews your application,” stated counselor Ms. Cobbs.
Students took this opportunity to talk to the admissions officers and representatives so they could learn more about the universities they possibly want to go to in the future.
“One college that really stood out to me was Fort Valley State University (FVSU), which is in Georgia and the representative was really informational about their campus and they have a really good program for my major which is nursing,” affirmed Solome Tadesse (‘25).
The event was also a chance for students, mostly seniors, to apply for scholarships and financial aid from
colleges to ensure that they wouldn’t have to worry about money during their experience at the university of their choice.
“I’m glad I went and took advantage of the field trip because I got a lot of money from scholarships and acceptances from schools that I didn’t even know existed until I went,” asserted Saron Muluneh (‘25).
This event epitomizes the true meaning of what it means to be a Preuss student and one of the many opportunities that Preuss offers to show off its distinctiveness.
