The following teachers have officially resigned from their teaching jobs at The Preuss School UCSD: Ms. Pizzo and Ms. Stipe, who were both English teachers, Ms. Anderson who was a 6th grade science teacher, and Ms. Petraglia a science teacher for both the 6th and half of the 9th grade class. All four of these teachers were teaching middle school classes before stepping down from their positions.
Ms. Pizzo, Stipe, and Anderson were brand new teachers at Preuss, having joined at the beginning of the school year. Ms Petraglia, however, worked at Preuss for twelve years before deciding to finally quit her job at Preuss. There are now many empty slots and vacant positions in these departments.
“Currently we have eight teacher vacancies. Two in the science, English, and special ed, and one in the history and PE departments. They all have substitutes and most of them are middle school teachers, making special ed a mix of middle school and high school students,’’ stated HS math teacher Dr. Weber.
Long term and short term substitutes are filling in for the vacancies. Teacher departures have also led to students losing their advisory teachers mid-year.
“Students are losing their connections with their teachers and the consistency of the work that they’ve been doing in class. The relationships they’ve built between certain teachers, now that’s getting strained,” mentioned Sabrina Haji (‘25).
Every Thursday the Preuss staff and some students and alumni protest outside the school fighting for a fair contract with UCSD and to gain awareness about the school and what’s going on.
“I think that the protests are good for the school so they will get more attention and supporters that could also possibly come from UCSD,” voiced Tiya Abebe (‘30).
With the recent staff departures, there is concern from the remaining staff that there could be more resignations.
