The Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team has approximately a month left in their season, with their last game scheduled for February 13. The girls have two games every week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from now until the end of the season. The team is preparing to finish the season strong.
The team’s performance in their games in the beginning of the season was not their best. They suffered four losses before their first win at Homecoming (2-0), and then another win against Liberty Charter (3-0) on Tuesday, January 7th.
“Since we did not have a girls soccer program last year, the team needed a little more time in getting familiar with one another,” said Coach Villalobos.
The girls varsity team this year mostly consists of freshmen. This means most of the team are familiar with each other making it fairly easy for the girls to communicate with each other, especially on the field.
“I think that I got along with everyone on my team, even the people I met for the first time,” said Rosy Garcia (‘28).
Based on the team’s past games, their skills have improved and they now understand their teammates’ playing styles. Their hard work during practice has also improved their chemistry and communication skills on the field.
Against Coastal Academy the team scored one point in each half, and against Liberty Charter where the girls scored two points in the first half and one point in the second.
“The last couple of matches we have done a great job taking care of the ball and understand the importance of each possession we have while on the field.”
Coach Villalobos continues, “The team has been showing tremendous improvement, and I think the team has really hit their stride at an important part of our season.”
The team is ready to end their season strong with the support from their teammates and coach.
“I was a bit nervous because of how we started off, but I am ready for my upcoming games in the season,” said Vanessa Venancio (‘28).
Two games every week means that the girls will have to go through much practice and dedication, especially against teams with higher rankings than them. The girls play open division, which means they play any team no matter what skill level they are. This means Coach Villalobos will have to work with the girls to make sure their best effort is shown in the games.
“The girls have shown that they can handle our schedule up to this point, even while facing some tougher teams,” mentioned Coach Villalobos.
While on the field, Coach Villalobos helps her girls by giving feedback on their plays. She also reminds the girls of the basics of the game and gives them an outside perspective on their performance. The girls will have to continue their game schedule during finals week. We will have to see how the girls endure this increased intensity and what results they will achieve.
“Having games and finals at the same time is a bit stressing but I think if I don’t put pressure on myself I could get through it,” said Garcia (‘28)
Venancio (‘28) said, “I am excited to see what achievements we will have this season since I believe we are getting better every game!”
The girls face High Tech CV on January 16 at 2:00 PM at HTCV, and a home game against Bayfront Charter on January 21 at 3:15 PM.
