The Preuss School is known for offering volleyball and cross country during the fall, soccer and basketball in the winter, lacrosse and track and field during the spring. During each season it is common for each sport to have games/meets for their sport regularly. However, Preuss doesn’t have enough transportation to get all student athletes to their away games. The lack of transportation is making getting to games a difficult situation for every athlete that needs to be present at the game or meet. Therefore Preuss needs better transportation for student athletes.
Currently the Girls’ Varsity Soccer has games about twice a week, and so far they have only played away matches. They have played games as far as Alpine, which is about an hour drive away from the school, taking into consideration that the students leave during peak traffic time around 2:00 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the vans can only hold eight students in the van, which is frustrating when there are twenty athletes on the team. Something a lot of students have done is find a way to get their own ride to the game and even carpool if they have the space, but that isn’t always possible.
When the team played against Liberty Charter, some of the players were able to get a ride and take a couple of players, but this obviously isn’t something the team is able to do for every game. Not only did the team need to find someone that was able to take the time out of their day to drive, but they also had to spend money on gas. This can’t happen every game because parents/guardians won’t always be available to provide transportation for us to get to the games, as adults they have other responsibilities. Transportation for athletes should be Preuss’s responsibility since we are leaving during school hours. In the same way the school is responsible for students to attend field trips, they should also be responsible for our transportation to games since they do take place during school hours.
As much as kids might commit to the team they might just have the disadvantage of not being able to play or participate due to transportation. A big issue with transportation occurred during volleyball season. There wasn’t enough room in the vans for both the Junior Varsity and Varsity team to their game in Bonsall. Adding on to the fact that sometimes the cross country team was also required to use the vans to get to their track meets.
Some of the Junior Varsity games were even cancelled because the team simply did not have a way to get to the away games. For example, the game against Bonsall High School on August 12th had to be canceled due to lack of transportation.
Preuss needs to do something about the transportation for our athletic teams to get to their away games. Other schools have access to bigger buses that fit more students and are driven safely. So should Preuss.
