Whenever students are riding the trolley from Preuss to our homes, it is important to be aware of the fact that the general public is also riding with us with expectations of us being respectful. Lately, a lot of bad actions have occurred on the trolley that occur from the very point in which we board. If students do not act well, it can damage the reputation of Preuss and make us look bad to the public. Proper trolley etiquette is required in order to maintain the safety of the general public and help us maintain a good reputation as a school.
Proper etiquette begins from the moment we board onto the trolley, which means not pushing, yelling, or trying to cram into the trolley doors, especially in the door which has the wheelchair ramp. If students push and yell, it not only makes us look bad but it also puts people in a stressful situation which could anger them and potentially injure them. Additionally, a lot of the time there are riders who are handicapped and they require the wheelchair ramp. If the ramp is covered because a hoard of students is trying to force their way in, it could cause the person to not be able to get off which could ultimately cause them to miss their stop. Instead of cramming, it is better to let people get off the trolley first then slowly walk into the trolley rather than pushing in order to show respect.
Another big problem that occurs while riding the trolley is constant yelling and screaming. This heavily damages our reputation since a lot of people who ride the trolley in the afternoon just got off of work and are trying to settle down. However, they can not do this if there are students constantly screaming. Sometimes things happen to the trolley which causes it to break down, and this is usually announced by the driver. It is really hard for people to hear what happens if there is constant yelling happening. Although interacting with friends and other students is good, it is important to keep it at a level where it won’t bother other people.
Being respectful to the trolley itself is important since we as students need it in order to get home. When people bring food onto the trolley, they tend to leave the trash on the floors and on the seats. Not only is this disrespectful to the people who clean the trolley but it is also just gross and bad for the environment. Being respectful to the trolley also means not vandalizing it in any way and making sure that you don’t write on the seats or destroy anything. Additionally, many have pressed the emergency button for no reason other than for laughs. This is not only very disrespectful but also dangerous as it can cause the MTS to think there is an actual emergency. Making sure that we pick up after ourselves, not vandalize the trolley, and not press the emergency button all contributes to proper trolley etiquette which helps to make us look respectful and representative of our school.
Riding the trolley is a privilege which we were granted when we began riding the trolley. This privilege can be taken away from us if proper behavior and etiquette isn’t shown. In order to keep this privilege, proper trolley etiquette must be followed!
