Veterans Day reminds us of all of those who served for our country, for the greater good of our community and the world around us. It became a celebration when legislation passed it on June 1, 1954, making it a holiday on November 11th to honor American Veterans of all wars and service.
Sharing veterans’ stories through media such as documentaries, interviews, and podcasts can make an impact on our community. Knowing the stories of veterans show us the challenging times that they went through during their time serving the country. A show to watch that really emphasizes what they went through is a program called “Veteran Chronicles” It helps us understand their unique perspective on the challenges faced and the experiences they had in the military and events such as personal experiences in combat, leadership and service and challenges after service.
Another way to represent what they went through are movies. Some movies that depict their reality are Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg, and Hacksaw Ridge by Mel Gibson. These fictionalized movies bring a variety of real events to our screen for people trying to connect with the veteran experience and also can be moving and educational.
Overall Veterans Day is not just a holiday, it is the remembrance of the strength and dedication of the ones who served our great country, and of those who will be serving. If you are watching a film, being a part of a parade or even leaving a message on social media, make sure you take the time to think about what our heroes went through. Their bravery and courage has made the country we live and enjoy today. The honoring makes us remember the strength and unity that represents the American spirit.
