Last year Preuss did not have a girl’s soccer team due to lack of commitment from the previous team, but this year is different. A new girls varsity soccer team will re-form with a new Coach, Ms.Villalobos. The season starts on November 19th and will end on February 13th.
“The goal for me for the new season is to create a space for the girls to practice their soccer skills and be with girls who have the same interest as them,” stated Ms. Villalobos.
The new girls varsity team is feeling nervous for their upcoming games. They are also feeling excited about competing against other schools.
“It is my first time being on a school sports team and I’m excited but at the same time scared,” stated Vanessa Venacio (‘28).
Soccer coaches play a very important role in a soccer team. They help out on what the team does in everything regarding soccer and support students’ academic expectations. They provide advice on what the team needs to do in order for their technique in the sport to improve. Coaches usually teach how to dribble, pass, and drills. Some coaches feel emotions of what they are doing with the team, and Coach Villalobos is no different.
“I think my biggest challenge is kind of understanding what my role is as a coach and if I’m doing right or wrong,” said Ms.Villalobos.
Teamwork plays a crucial role in the girl’s way of working. Communication can help the girls when they need it in regards to games and practicing. Teamwork is a great aspect that can greatly impact a team’s performance not only in the field and also in the classrooms. Playing with each other for Preuss girls helps them build their way up to victory.
“When we play on the field we all build each other up and help one another,” said Luz Montano (‘28).
As Preuss focuses on education, sports is still an important factor that Preuss students participate in, with practice being an important part of preparing and using important skills such as teamwork.
“We go against each other at practice and we always try a new skill everyday” stated Montano (‘28).
The varsity girls soccer team’s first home game will be against Liberty Charter on December 5, 2024.
