Do you like the school lunches here? School lunches in public schools are typically unappetizing and don’t taste very good. Some lunches at Preuss are also not very flavorful. In my humble opinion, Preuss lunches should have more variety, better taste, and be better quality. Although some scholars may see this as pointless, more students would actually eat and enjoy school lunches if they improved.
First, school lunches at Preuss should have more variety. Every week we have the same foods: burgers, pizza, salads, and the salad bar has the same sides daily. Preuss should try to have different styles of lunches. For example, Italian, Hispanic, Chinese, Japanese, and Ethiopian food. More variety would lure more students to eat school lunches daily. The salad bar could also have a variety of fruits and vegetables. There could be a schedule every week of different fruits and vegetables to display for students to choose from.
How could school lunches taste better? The cafeteria could make them fresh instead of having the food frozen. One of my friends bit into her hamburger and the patty was frozen, causing her to throw it away. Another way they could make them taste better is by adding seasoning. For example, we could be offered salt, pepper, oregano, and other seasonings. There should also be a variety of sauces to pick from. For example, there could be Mexican hot sauces, BBQ sauce, Polynesian sauce, sriracha, etc.
School lunches could also be higher quality. I believe the food should be delivered daily, if possible. The fruits and vegetables should be cut and washed daily as well. When the salad bar has strawberries and blueberries they are either very mushy or frozen. The school could suggest getting food from different companies with higher quality if possible. This way school lunches will be better quality as much as possible.
Some people might already like school lunches and don’t think they should change. Many students enjoy lunches like pizza, mozzarella sticks, cheeseburgers, and chicken sandwiches. Lots of students also love the salad bar. For example, the oranges, plums, and pickles. However, these foods are junk food and processed. Therefore we should have better lunches.
If students had more options and more flavorful foods it will cause students to eat school lunches daily, making them not go hungry so they can concentrate during the school day.
Are there any other ways to make school lunches better, or do you like them just as they are? Send us your thoughts!
Remember to thank your cafeteria staff no matter what because they still provide what they can every day.
