The Preuss School UCSD is known for having a JV and Varsity volleyball team for high school girls, but it does not have a volleyball team for high school male students. Many argue over whether or not boys should have the same opportunities as girls, and get to play volleyball. Preuss should be open to starting a volleyball team for male students just as they have a volleyball team for female students.
Adding a volleyball team for male students would bring more diversity to the school and would give male students more options and opportunities to explore their athletic abilities and interests. Some of the many schools that have a boys volleyball team consist of San Diego Academy, San Ysidro High School and Tri-City Christian High School. These schools are able to offer their students more options when it comes to exploring their athletic interests in sports.
Having an opportunity to play a sport that isn’t always offered for male students in other schools will not only stand out to other schools but will also be able to encourage students to focus and prioritize their academic studies. When students play a sport, they gain more motivation to keep their grades up and as best as possible to be eligible to play during their high school season. I understand this because with the soccer season starting up soon in November, one of my biggest focuses at the moment is maintaining stable grades and focusing on my education. I have to make sure I am eligible to get play time on the field because when student athletes don’t prioritize being a student, they might not get to play their sport.
Although I think Preuss should have a boy volleyball team, I also think they will face one of the biggest issues in finding a coach to lead the team. It may be too much for one coach to have to coach two different teams.
Regardless, I still believe that the school would benefit a lot from having a boys volleyball team. Male students would enjoy getting the opportunity to play as it has been seen on campus that the high school boys play during their lunch period at times. It would bring recognition to the Preuss school as most high schools only offer a volleyball team to female high school students. Starting and encouraging male students to play the volleyball sport would open up more opportunities for high school boys to get a better high school experience.
