On June 8th, Preuss seniors assembled at the Walton Center from 6pm to 7:30pm for the annual senior awards program called “Salute to the Stars.” The event recognized students for their hard work and accomplishments.
The school sponsored event was organized by the Preuss counselors: Ms. Bandy, Ms. Silva, Mrs. Cobbs, and Ms. Patrick. Students invited their friends and family members to cheer them on as they received department awards and scholarships. Preuss faculty nominated students for school related awards including Math, Visual and Performing Arts, and English. Teachers from each department shared a few words of encouragement as they called up the students to receive their certificates.
“I was really happy for them, seeing their names on the board, especially ones that got multiple,” shared Richard Doan (‘24).
Numerous students also received community based scholarships. These recipients were required to fill out applications that included writing essays, showcasing their academic achievements, and leadership qualities. The scholarship awards ranged from $300 to $10,000.
Seniors had a great time celebrating, and some even provided feedback on how the event could be improved for the upcoming years.
“The achievements are very class based and there are multiple other students who achieved things outside of class. I feel like there could be an opportunity to recognize those sorts of students,” stated Doan (‘24).
The school’s focus is to acknowledge successes within the school community. Doan’s observation emphasizes the importance of expanding recognition beyond academic achievements including community contributions and artistic accomplishments. Doan feels this change could better reflect the talents of all students, creating a more inclusive environment.
“Salute to the Stars” was created to be both a ceremony and a social gathering. The back of the Walton Center was decorated with graduation themed tables and backdrops. The school offered appetizers and drinks for the seniors to celebrate. Students and families captured these exciting moments with the photo booths and props.
“The decorations made the atmosphere feel rewarding and exciting. It felt good to be recognized and celebrated by the faculty at the end of our Preuss journey,” describes Anali Centeno Aragon (‘24).
Senior Awards was a memorable event for the Class of 2024, as it reflected upon their talents and dedication to their future.
