Participating Preuss class of 2024 seniors were excited to celebrate the end of their Earnst and Young MAP mentorship program. The event included dinner and desserts as well as a laptop as a farewell gift from the people at Ernst and Young.
Ernst and Young is a large financial services company that operates worldwide and has offices in nearly every major city. They mainly focus on tax and accounting services for large companies like Nike, Apple, Coca Cola and more.
Starting in 2022, Ernst and Young began a new chapter of their established Mentoring for Access and Persistence program (MAP) in San Diego. Students were picked by Preuss’ liaison to Ernst and Young, Mr Carr. They were selected based on his belief in their ability to complete the program and gain the most from all the opportunities offered by it.
“I chose students for this program who I felt had missed other opportunities; hence the exclusion of those in other programs, but also those who I felt would make a good first impression with the people of EY, as this is the first cohort of students who they will meet,” shared Mr. Carr.
In this program students would commute to the Ernst and Young Executive Drive office location using the trolley once a month. While there they would receive mentorship and advice from professionals at the company. Additionally they were provided with lunch and refreshments. The advice would span from different topics like how to pick a college to financial literacy. They would also offer help in proofreading resumes as well as college applications, assisting scholars in preparation for their mock interviews and more.
“I really liked the program because it helped me learn a lot of things about college and the working world that I never would have known, ” expressed participant Antonio Ceron (‘24).
Students are chosen and introduced in their sophomore year and will participate at least until they graduate but can pursue further mentorship if they have the desire to continue. Students who would like to apply must write an essay on why they believe they would be a good fit. They are then selected based on their GPA, which must be at least 3.0, and cannot participate in other similar programs such as Access Youth Academy, Bridge For Kids, Reality Changers, etc.
While this current group of seniors’ journey with Ernst and Young is over, Ernst and Young are looking to welcome a new group of Preuss sophomores. If current sophomores feel that they would be a good fit for the program, they should keep an eye out for any announcements or applications in the near future.
