There has not been a boys JV or Varsity volleyball team since Preuss started. The boys at Preuss should have the opportunity to have their own team, just like the girls. There would be a lot of participation and interest because we can see the involvement with the volleyball club run by Jefferson Lam.
Other schools have more options than Preuss does when it comes to sports for high schoolers. For example, Lincoln High School and Hoover high have a boys volleyball team. Preuss should have those options as well so that students can explore their academic ability. Adding boys volleyball will achieve that goal.
“I think the boys who are interested in doing it, looked to be a different demographic from kids who are already doing other sports, so it may add athletics to the high school level,” states Mr. Fulchiron, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer coach.
We have a boys’ soccer, lacrosse, and a basketball team so it would make sense to have a volleyball team as well. The boys at Preuss who are interested in the sport would have the opportunity to explore their hobby. This sport is not for everyone, but that is why Preuss offers other sports that hopefully they can enjoy. Adding a team can make more students involved in sports and school spirit.
“The question would be how do we add it and make it work with all the other things,” states Mr. Fulchrion.
The scheduling makes it difficult to add another sport at Preuss. We have Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country and Girls’ Volleyball in the fall, so adding Boys’ Volleyball at the same time will cause difficulties. We can’t have too many students out of class at once. There is also the issue of if the girls are having their game the same day as the boys. How are they both going to get there? Transportation will be a big issue between the two teams. The final issue is finding a coach. The school already has difficulty finding coaches for boys basketball and girls lacrosse.
Although these are huge issues I believe that a team would still be beneficial for the school. To deal with scheduling changes, they can have a Beach Volleyball team for the boys, not just the girls now, until the sports department arranges the fall season and finds a coach.
“I think boys would for sure join because when at lunch there are ALWAYS so many boys playing volleyball. As a matter of fact, there are actually more boys playing volleyball than girls,” notes Kirsten Rodriguez (‘25).
There are boys that enjoy playing volleyball for fun and they are very good at playing, so now imagine if they can play for Preuss. There’s no doubt that boys would join a Boys’ Volleyball team.
