Movies Bingeworthy for October

Lesly Castillo, Entertainment Writer

With October finally here, Halloween is getting closer! There is plenty of time and things to do to get in the spirit for this month and the holiday. One of the best ways is to watch movies. Fortunately, there are a variety of movie options available to watch at home to get in the spirit of this month.

Coraline is a popular movie to watch in October for both kids and teenagers. Coraline was released in 2009. The movie’s about a girl named Caroline who moves into a new house with her parents who are pretty distant due to work and finds an old door at night. Once she crawls out from the other end of the door, it’s an alternate world that mirrors her world but all the flaws are fixed making it the “perfect” world. Once she realizes that her “other” family intends to keep her there forever and have her join the kids from the past and tries to escape and set them free. This movie leaves viewers with questions about wanting more. The animation is also different and unique because viewers don’t really see the type of animation in movies so it gives you a new perspective.

The Nightmare Before Christmas has continued to grow more popular over time since its 1993 release. It’s a different style of cartoon compared to cartoons like SpongeBob. This movie is about the pumpkin king that got bored of his world with the same routines annually. He stumbles upon doors to new worlds of the different seasons. He chose the door to Christmas and was filled with joy and curiosity which led to the pumpkin king kidnapping Santa Claus and taking his role. He then realizes his mistakes and the consequences. This movie has catchy songs that will most likely get stuck in people’s heads. This movie is spooky but also very colorful and jolly. With this movie expressing both Christmas and Halloween traditions, it gives us the perspective of both worlds.

Corpse Bride, in 2005, is similar to the animation for The Nightmare Before Christmas. There are even multiple theories that The Nightmare Before Christmas is the afterlife of Corpse Bride because of the similar animation and characters. Corpse Bride is about a man named Victor who is getting an arranged marriage by his parents but gets nervous about the ceremony. While he goes on a walk to remember his lines, a tree branch turns into a hand and drags him to the dead. It belonged to Emily, who was murdered after eloping with her love and wants to marry Victor. Victor needed to go back aboveground before Victoria marries the villain. With the twist at the end revealing who the villain was because of Emily’s mysterious lover throughout most of the movie was shocking. The movie was very beautiful and was filled with love.

The Addams Family was released just in October 11, 2019. There are multiple The Addams Family movies and shows with the original being a series in 1964. The Addams Family in 2019, though, is animated. The movie is about Members of the Addams family (Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday, Uncle Fester and Grandma) are readily preparing for a visit from their creepier relatives. Trouble then arises when Margaux Needler realizes that the Addams’ eerie mansion is standing in the way of her dream to sell all the houses in the neighborhood. This movie is different from other movies because the Addams Family are pretty dark people or not the most joyful family nor colorful. Usually in movies, people are joyful or just overly happy. This movie illustrates the characters not always being happy or joyful and how it’s okay or it’s not needed to be expressed.

Halloween Town is older than the movies listed above. This movie was released in 1998 from Disney Channel. The movie is about a teenage girl named Marnie that gets a visit from her grandma that she sees once a year on Halloween. Marnie finds out that they’re family are witches. Marnie and her siblings follow their grandma when she leaves the house and they end up going into another world named Halloweentown. Halloweentown is a town of supernatural creatures and beings but are living a normal life. The problem was that Marnie and her family were involved in a fight against the evil that is threatening to take over the world. This movie shows viewers the lives of the supernatural beings living their own lives. This movie is a great representation of how family is very important by demonstrating to the viewers how Marnie’s family fought off the evil in Halloweentown with each other.
